Christmas is the perfect time of year to flex your creative interior design skills, especially with the number of social gatherings going up as we get closer to the all-important holiday. But before stockpiling all the Christmas decorations you can get your hands on, we suggest creating a design plan that consists of three individual phases:
The Living Area
This is the centerpiece of your interior design and it will be the area guests remember and spend the most time in. The first and most obvious decoration piece you should get is a Christmas Tree. When looking for one, take into account the size of your home and the colour scheme of your home. Use that to make an informed decision on whether or not you go for a Traditional Green Christmas Tree, a Coloured Christmas Tree, or a Snowy Christmas Tree.
The size of your home dictates whether or not you should buy a tree that is lush and full or thin and elegant. The aim is to make a Christmas tree feel like a piece of furniture, yet still be able to catch the eye. In addition, to the space, the colour scheme will dictate the style of Christmas tree that best suits your house. You'll have to choose carefully in order to ensure it compliments your living area.
The living space should also have strategically placed secondary design pieces. Here at Chimes Home and Gardens, we've been very big fans of Christmas figures (we're biased towards the nutcrackers!). Having secondary stand-alone pieces of decoration spreads the festive decoration without overcrowding an area.
This is so that the living space doesn't feel like the only thought being given to its design is putting a Christmas Tree inside it. That way, more of the room feels as if it's decorated for Christmas rather than a singular corner.
Lighting and Light Touches
Now that you've chosen the key components of your living space. It's time to accentuate the festive mood with light decorative pieces. Light touches like Christmas Tree Decorations, Christmas Tree Rings, and the old-fashioned Tinsel (just a light touch of tinsel!) are enough to make the difference between a decorated and designed home.
The easiest way to choose good lighting for Christmas is by asking what would compliment your tree and its surroundings. It should be easier to make a decision on the colours of your light once you've chosen a Christmas tree that compliments your pre-existing colour scheme.
Exterior Design
There's no need to stop at the interior design plan either. The outside of your home should match the inside to turn the festive joy into an experience from walking towards your home and into it. Break it into individual pieces:
The Door:
The door should have a signature piece that acts as the centerpiece of your entryway. When guests knock on your door, it's their preview to the magic inside and nothing beats the classic Chrismas Wreath.
It's a timeless classic that has many variations of its own. Treat it as the Christmas Tree of your exterior design. The rest of your decorations will be built outwards from your door.
The Walls:
Much like how we recommend having a secondary decorative piece for your Christmas Tree, we wholeheartedly suggest having something that compliments your wreath. Much like how you've lit up your interior design, you should have something that compliments the rest of your exterior. Our recommendation is an LED Decorative Tree that compliments the rest of the Christmas Lighting.
The Windows:
Looking in a window is the architectural equivalent of looking into someone's eyes. Having a window that's decorated on the outside gives it character and adds to the warm festive feeling you get when you look inside to see friends and family waiting for you. Having Christmas lights that wrap around the window ledge highlights what you see through the glass, and once you've chosen lights that complement your chosen secondary piece of decoration, it all seamlessly blends into one cohesive design.
